When we moved from a duplex with carpet to our house with all laminate floors, I thought I’d never have to vacuum again. Surely a quick sweep of the floors with a dust mop would be enough. It was…until we adopted Chloe.
Now don’t get me wrong. We love Chloe, the dog. But do you see that hair?
She sheds like crazy! Every morning I sweep the floors, and every morning it looks like someone lost an entire head of hair! It’s that bad!
With that in mind, I jumped at the chance to review the Eureka AirSpeed vacuum cleaner.
About the Eureka AirSpeed
The Eureka AirSpeed is a bagless 12 amp vacuum with a HEPA filter. The first thing I noticed when I pulled it out of the box is how much lighter it was than my old vacuum. I also noticed that the dust cup was a good size, important when you’re vacuuming up lots of dog hair!
Included on board attachments include a 3 position wand, a crevice tool, a dusting brush, and a turbo nozzle. A bare floor nozzle and wand and a stair hose are not included, but are available for purchase separately.
Also included is a filter brush, so you can clean off the filter, increasing the length of time you can use the filter before replacing.
The vacuum includes four height settings: high carpet, medium carpet, low carpet, and bare floor.
The recommended maintenance schedule is to empty the dust cup after each use, clean or replace the filter regularly, and replace the exhaust filter every six months (or more if needed).
The key difference between the AirSpeed and other vacuums is the fact that there is no lengthy hose for debris to travel, which increases the vacuum’s suction power. The hose is only used in attachment mode.
Randall Sandlin, Eureka’s general manager of consumer experience and innovation says,
Most upright vacuums propel air through a nozzle and hose system that is long and full of twists and texturing. AirSpeed cleans carpets better than many other uprights because we have removed the hose from the equation and replaced it with wider, shorter tubes, allowing more airflow to go through the vacuum, which results in a powerful, deep clean.
I must say, the way the hose is set up on the airspeed, allowing for quickly switching between vacuum and attachment mode, is certainly consumer friendly.
My Experience with the Eureka Air Speed
I really liked the AirSpeed’s ease of use! After I began vacuuming, the first thing I noticed was that the vacuum cleaned the edges of the floor really well. Instead of needing the crevice tool, I just ran the vacuum up against the wall and the dog hair along the wall was sucked right up!
I loved the bare floor setting, as the brush roll doesn’t hit my floor and damage the laminate.
And my favorite feature of the AirSpeed is the fact that switching from vacuum mode to attachment mode is so easy. You just flip a dial and pick up the attachment hose. I found that it was really easy to be vacuuming along and switch to the hose attachment to quickly reach under a bookcase, then switch back to vacuum the rest of the floor.
When finished vacuuming, the dust cup is easy to remove and empty.
The Low Down on the Eureka Airspeed
Pros:
- Lightweight
- Vacuums edges well
- Easy to switch to attachment mode
- Large dust cup
- Filter brush to help extend filter life
Cons:
- The on/off switch seems a little flimsy, and I worry it will break eventually, especially if the kids vacuum.
My Overall Thoughts
I really liked this vacuum. Despite my concern about the on/off switch, I will be ditching my older Kenmore in favor of the new Eureka. What sold me on the Eureka was the edge cleaning and the ease of attachment use.
The Eureka AirSpeed is available for $119.96 at Walmart.com or in Walmart stores. To find out more about the Eureka AirSpeed, visit Eureka.com.
You tell me: What is most important to you, when considering a new vacuum?
*Disclaimer: Eureka provided me with a vacuum in exchange for my honest review.
I have a bad back and so I need a lightweight vacuum with good suction so I’m not vacuuming over the same spots again and again.
I look for a vacuum that can obviously do the job. We have a lot of dust where we live and that can settle into the carpet and does nothing but inflame our allergies. So, hopefully the AirSpeed will do the job!
No matter how much you pay, or how many bells and whistles come with a vacuum, a vacuum is only as good as its suction. I clean houses for two clients that have Dyson vacuums and for what they paid for them I’m not that impressed. They are heavy, and using the attachments is time consuming. I had a Eureka years ago and after years of abuse it died. Since then we have had a Bissell (lasted 8 MO.) a Dirt Devil, (lasted 2 Yr). We are going back to Eureka.
You can’t turn off the brush roll. It scatters debris back at your feet. Better yet buy the Eureka 4870. All the good features and you can turn off the brush.
It is really important for me to have a vacuum that does well with dog hair. I am a pet lover, and I know what its like to have to go over a spot of floor several times to get up the hair. I am also a dust mite allergy sufferer, so it means a lot to me to have a vacuum that has a lot of suction power without having to spend a fortune.
This vacuum sounds great. With two kids and six pets (not to mention the four opossums we are currently caring for) I can’t keep the floors clean. The Eureka Airspeed may just do the job.
I just purchased the Eureka Airspeed last week and so far, I love it! I have a long haired cat, a 4 year old, and a 2 story house. It picks up the cat hair with ease, doesn’t leave a trace of cereal on the bare floor, and is light enough to carry up and down stairs. It is amazing! I would like another one to share with my mom, she would love it as much as I do.
There are a number of things I want in an ideal vacuum. It would have to be lightweight, bagless, have washable filters, and be able to turn the brushes off for bare floors. The Eureka Air Speed may be the one I’ve been looking for.
Greetings, I have been looking for a vacuum that does not require a bag. I have great allergies and a dog to boot! I have my first granddaughter as well, I make sure everything is clean for her but our vacuum has gone bad now and we are in need of a new one for all our sake! I have been online studying vacuum cleaners and this one tops all others. It came very close to one that was $998 but this price is more reasonable. There was a vacuum test online. Most important I love Eureka vacuums because they last longer and they are durable. My mom had a Eureka! So I grew up with them, I rather stick with something I know and have faith in and trust. Our last vacuum, no need for names but it was cheap and has not even lasted a year…If I don’t win one I will buy one. God bless!
I have owned this vacuum cleaner for several months now, and while I basically agree with the review above, that apparently was ONE USE. Oh boy do I wish we had our old one back. This one is engineered well on paper–there are some handy things. But in practical use, not so much. For one thing, if you don’t empty the canister after about every second use, the vacuum shuts down and won’t start again until it cools, usually 30 minutes. That’s too often. And when you do empty it, better get a dust mask and old clothes. You’ll have to bang it on the side of the trash can dozens of times to get the dust bunnies out–and you’ll still have to reach up in there and pull them loose. The dust cloud is enormous by that point. There is an attachment for the hose for stair use with a small spinning brush powered by the force of the vacuum–neat!, I thought. I thought wrong. One hair wrapped around it renders it useless. Have you ever vacuumed without picking up a hair?
In short, don’t buy it. We’re going to have to give in, get rid of this one, and buy another kind way earlier than we planned.
My son is getting married May 21st and as I was going through the wal-mart wedding registry I noticed they had chosen an off brand vacum that i’ve never personally used. I’ve always used Eureka vacums. I’d love to start them off with a new Eureka vacum and this looks and sounds like a very good choice for a family just starting off.
Just purchased one of these a few weeks ago. I have never owned a bagless sweeper before. I absolutely LOVE IT!
Compared to my older model, its a Corvette compared to my old worn down bag type vacuum!
I was absolutely amazed that this vaccum actually pulled dirt/dust from underneath my carpets!
You won’t be dissappointed with this vacuum!
We have two dogs that shed alot we vacuum daily and we never get all the dirt out. We want the carpet to not only look clean but be clean all the way down to the nap. Plus our current vacuum will not clean hard floor so we have to use two different machines. I want all the power and versitility in one machine.
I am looking for something a little more heavy duty for the whole house, that will clean up dog and cat hair.
I love my Eureka Quick-Up cordless/rechargeble vacuum, because it is lightweight, and does a great job for a quick cleanup.
Eureka has good products, and I can’t wait to try the new Air Speed model.
Thanks Eureka for making my life easier!
The most important feature to me when purchasing a vacuum is the ability to clean well weighed against the accumulated costs for maintenance; bags, belts etc. The non-commisioned salesman at Walmart said that this one is the real deal.
I have been doing research on bag less vacuum cleaners for over a month now and narrowed it down to 3 possibilities. I read the pros and cons and got more and more confused as to which one I wanted. I run a doggy daycare in my home and need something that will work great. My first choice was a Dyson but the price kept me away,my second choice was a Hoover, still over my comfort zone but…. Then I saw an ad for the Eureka Air Speed that states that it is better then a Dyson at 1/3 the cost. That’s the one i bought and I can’t believe the filth I got from just the first use.I highly recommend this vacuum, but there is a but… The bag less system is a great idea but what a mess to empty the canister. If you don’t have a compressor I would not get a bag less vacuum .
Yes you can wash the filter, but then you have to wait til its dry to use again. Since I need to Vacuum on a daily basis to keep the dogs safe I can’t wait that long.
I need a vacuum that not only has a hose long enough to reach my drapes, but one that doesn’t have a filter inside the canister. The vacuum I currently own has a filter inside the canister and makes a mess everytime I empty it.
I’m very satisfied owning Eureka products. My current Boss vacuum is still running fine even after 10 years! But I just purchased a two-story home and in need of a lighter unit. It would be great to win this great product which is lighter and more advanced than the Boss. Keep up the good work Eureka!
