Memorial Day is Monday, and for me, that means BB!! The weather is nice, and it’s great to spend time outside, enjoying the company of family and friends…or even just spending the afternoon together with your immediate family.
Here’s a quick and easy menu for a tasty barbeque.
- Hamburgers & Hotdogs – I make my own hamburger patties to save money. The meat is better than the frozen patties, too.
- Potato Salad – I don’t use a recipe. I just cook the potatoes and then dice them up. I add mayonnaise, mustard, salt, pepper, chopped dill pickles, and a little bit of pickle juice. You could add eggs, olives, or anything else you like.
- Corn on the Cob – Shuck the corn, then place on a piece of foil, along with a pat of butter. Wrap the foil tightly around the corn and butter, and place it on the grill. Yum-O!
- Baked Beans – I’ve always just used canned beans, because they’re quick and easy, but if you plan ahead, you could use dried beans to save money. Jenn has a great baked bean recipe at Frugal Upstate.
Add some chips for crunch, a green salad for a veggie, and maybe some Jello for color, and you’ve got a yummy, frugal, Memorial Day barbeque. Don’t forget the ice cream for dessert! And to please the kids, make ice cream cones!
Do you have plans for Memorial Day? What’s on the menu?
Going clam digging in the morning – then Clam Fritters with potato Salad and baked beans. While I use canned baked beans – I spice them up by adding bacon, onions or chives from the garden, catsup, BBQ sauce, mustard, liquid smoke, and brown sugar. Yum :)
I have to agree on the homemade hamburger patties. My family loves our homemade burger night – nice meaty, tasty patties. Yum!
boneless, not boonless *L*
We have a giant booneless pork loin in the freezer that we got on sale for $1.29 a pound. We’ll thaw that and give it a good jerk rub, then grill.
We don’t have good corn in WI at this time of the year, but if the grocer has some sweet corn, we’ll do corn on the cob too. (oh yum)
A simple potato salad (or I might roast small new potatoes in foil on the grill), grilled garlic herb bread, fruit plate, cheese plate, 7 layer salad or broccoli slaw and brownies for dessert.
to make corn even easier: I use no foil and do not soak in water, we just toss them right on the grill with no prep at all. For years I soaked them, and then one time I didn’t and the result was the same, they don’t catch on fire and they steam great with the moisture in the husks.
A nice slow grill produces corn so sweet I don’t think it even needs butter!
Sounds good! We always just soak our corn in water, and then grill it with the husk on. Put a couple of sticks of butter into a large jar of hot water… the butter will float to the top, so you just dip your ear of corn in and it gets a nice even coating of butter with no hassle! Yummy!
Very relevant tips. I too haven’t ever used a recipe for tater salad. Always do it by feel.
Sounds yummy! You actually just described our lunch and dinner menu from this past weekend. We had family up this weekend to avoid the traffic of the holiday weekend. We did hotdogs and Bush’s grilling beans (I highly recommend– almost as good as homemade) for lunch. Then, we did hamburgers, sausages, corn, and homemade potato salad (which was outstanding) for dinner.
